Lawrence Taylor selling his '91 Super Bowl Ring Empty

From NFL.com

Lawrence Taylor is selling his 1991 Super Bowl ring in an online auction. The ring has been notarized by Taylor.

"Presented here is arguably the most significant Superbowl player ring ever offered publicly," the website SCP Auctions boasts, with many camera angles on Taylor's ring.

The current bid is $37,982. The auction ends this Saturday night and the reserve price for the ring has not yet been met.

Taylor has fallen on hard times since his legendary career ended with legal and financial problems. Arguably the greatest defensive player of all time, it just doesn't seem right that he has to sell this ring for cash. But that's life.

We just can't imagine the person that sees this as a cool collector's item instead of finding the whole concept depressing.

Very sad when a player has to sell off a championship ring to make ends meet, but just because you were a god on the field doesn't always transfer to off the field.

On Thursday, we told you the sad story of Lawrence Taylor's Super Bowl ring going up for auction. It turns out that Taylor isn't the one selling the ring.

NFL Network contributor and Fox Sports Insider Jay Glazer spoke with Taylor, who was unaware the ring was for sale. Apparently Taylor's son put the ring up for auction. The Hall of Famer doesn't have a problem with it because he gave the ring to his son and feels he can do whatever he wants with it.

The bidding for the ring, which ends on Saturday night, was $37,892 on Thursday morning. Just one day later, it has skyrocketed to $89,568. A six figure final pricetag looks inevitable.

While the story is no longer as depressing as it once seemed, it still doesn't feel right that son rich sports collector will wind up with the ring.

Pity............that sort of thing seems like something that should stay in the family. Kind of like football medals, etc. But these things seem to get sold off these days....guess times are hard for them, too.
