MANCHESTER CITY could launch a surprise £35million bid for Liverpool's want-away striker Luis Suarez.
Not prepared to meet the £53m escape clause for Napoli's Edinson Cavani, new Etihad boss Manuel Pellegrini is looking to switch his attention to his Uruguayan teammate.
And Liverpool, now reluctantly resigned to losing the former Ajax star, would welcome a bidding war as they look for a big profit on their £23m outlay for the striker.
Suarez is keen to join Real Madrid, who have made noises about signing the 26-year-old over the past month.
The player has used his time in the Confederations Cup in Brazil to press home the view that he is being driven out of England through media criticism.
But Liverpool, who have supported him through a number of controversies, feel let down and an auction would give them the final decision on where Suarez goes. That has alerted ambitious City, although a bigger challenge for them is to persuade Suarez to remain in England.
Bayern Munich are also interested, which Liverpool hope will drive the price up further.
